CadQuery vs. OpenSCAD: Benchmarking CAD Tools for Autonomous AI Agents

ModelRift conducted a controlled comparison between OpenSCAD and CadQuery—a Python library based on the OpenCascade B-rep (Boundary Representation) kernel—to determine which tool is more effective for autonomous AI agents. Six agents were tasked with modeling three distinct components: a simple L-bracket, a two-part snap-fit enclosure, and a complex helical threaded adapter.

While all six runs resulted in printable STL files, the tools diverged significantly in how they handle errors. OpenSCAD demonstrated faster rendering and simplicity in text-based modeling, but it was prone to "silent failures." In one test, it certified an STL file as clean despite it containing non-manifold edges and zero-area triangles.

In contrast, CadQuery's strength lies in its ability to support robust geometric verification. While the agent encountered errors—such as a fillet error where a radius exceeded the wall thickness—the tool's assertion system enabled the agent to identify and rectify issues through numeric feedback.

The results suggest that for unattended AI generation, numeric assertions regarding wall thickness, clearances, and volume are more reliable than visual feedback alone. While OpenSCAD remains an efficient choice due to its compact text format and rapid rendering, CadQuery provides superior capabilities for verifying the integrity of complex geometries.
