Anthropic Unifies Claude Chat and Cowork; Introduces Claude Docs and Slides

Anthropic announced on September 16, 2026, that it is merging its standard chat interface with "Cowork," an agentic workspace designed for complex, multi-step tasks. This unification, referred to as "one Claude," aims to eliminate the need for users to decide which interface is appropriate for a given task. Under the new single interface, Claude can leverage existing context, skills, and connectors from any conversation, and integrates Artifacts and Claude Design capabilities.

In conjunction with this merger, Anthropic is launching "Claude Docs" and "Claude Slides" in beta. These new productivity tools allow users to generate documents and presentations directly through Claude chats. Users can edit content manually, ask Claude to make specific changes, and export the final products to PowerPoint or PDF formats. All content created with Docs, Slides, or Design is accessible via a single shareable link that works on mobile devices.

The update is being rolled out over the coming weeks, starting with Pro and Max plans on web, desktop, and mobile platforms. Team and Free plans will receive access at a later date. Enterprise administrators will be notified at least 30 days before changes are applied to their organizations. Users do not need to manually enable these features.

For tasks requiring autonomous action, users can choose between "Manual" mode, where Claude asks for permission before taking action, and "Auto" mode, where the AI performs tasks with automatic safety checks. Existing Cowork projects, including their tasks, artifacts, and connectors, will be preserved and integrated into the unified sidebar.
