Docker Announces "Docker Cloud Sandboxes" for AI Agents, Enabling Seamless Environment Migration Between Local and Cloud

In February 2026, the company announced "Docker Sandboxes," an isolated environment based on MicroVMs (Micro Virtual Machines) that runs on local machines. The newly announced "Docker Cloud Sandboxes" provides similar lightweight environments via MicroVMs in the cloud. In addition to high-speed startup times in the hundreds of milliseconds, it features the same command-line interface, trust model, and MCP interface as the existing Docker Sandboxes.

The standout feature is the ability to capture the filesystem of a running sandbox and recreate it on the other side. This allows users to migrate AI agent workloads from local to cloud, or vice versa, without interrupting their work.

This functionality addresses challenges such as local machine load during long-term large-scale coding tasks, or insufficient computational resources when launching multiple sub-agents simultaneously. Users can develop using free sandboxes in their local environment and efficiently migrate to cloud resources as they scale up.
