The EDG C/C++ front end is an open-source project. It provides a highly configurable and compatible tool for C and C++ parsing, with additional documentation available to aid humans and AI agents in product development.
EDG C/C++ Compiler Front End is Open Source
The front end is designed for high parsing compatibility and bug emulation to ensure that source code compiling with Clang, GCC, or MSVC also compiles with EDG. It supports the ISO/IEC 14882:2020 and 14882:2024 C++ standards, as well as several versions of the C standard including ISO/IEC 9899:1990, 1999, 2011, and 2018, along with some features from ISO/IEC 9899:2024. Additionally, it accepts Microsoft, GNU, and Clang dialects, as well as C++/CLI for the .NET environment.
The front end produces a high-level, tree-structured in-memory intermediate language (IL) containing full information on declarations, statements, and expressions. While the front end itself performs no optimization, it provides complete error checking and produces clear error messages. The project includes a C-generating back end, a C++-generating back end for source-to-source transformation, a prelinker for automatic template instantiation, and a minimal runtime support library.
