EU Launches Investigation into Google's AI-Generated Summaries in Search Results

The scope of the investigation includes whether YouTube videos were used to improve broader AI systems. Specifically, the focus is on whether content creators were provided with opt-out functions to refuse such use. Furthermore, the "AI Mode," which provides answers in a conversational format, will also be examined.

A Google spokesperson said that this investigation "risks stifling innovation in a market that is more competitive than ever." The company argued that European users should benefit from the latest technology and stated that it will continue to collaborate with the news and creative industries.

Meanwhile, Ed Newton-Rex of Fairly Trained, an AI fairness campaign group, said that this investigation comes at a critical time for creators. He pointed out that Google is effectively mandating the use of materials for building competing AI as a condition for online publication.

Rosa Curling of Foxglove, who has advocated for the impact on independent media, also welcomed the start of the investigation. However, she warned that dangers to journalism and democracy still exist. She argued that prompt opt-outs are necessary without waiting for the investigation to conclude.

European Commission Vice-President Teresa Ribera said that a free and democratic society depends on a diverse media landscape. She stated that while the EU should enjoy the innovations and benefits brought by AI, it must not be allowed to grow in a way that contradicts EU values.
