Unstablebuild Open-sources Rune, a High-Performance Go-based IDE
Rune is designed as a native Go application that emphasizes speed and efficiency. It utilizes GPU-accelerated rendering for its user interface and includes a built-in multiplexer to manage multiple terminals simultaneously. While it primarily focuses on command-line workflows, it supports the Language Server Protocol (LSP) and provides first-class support for Go and Python, with Rust and Zig currently in beta. It also allows users to connect to various AI coding agents, such as OpenAI Codex, Anthropic Claude, and Google Gemini, via API keys.
A key feature of Rune is its "SSH workspace" function, which allows users to operate remote machines as if they were local, handling complex tasks like key management automatically through encrypted channels.
To encourage open-source participation, Unstablebuild is introducing a novel contributor program. Unlike many companies that change licenses once a project gains value, Unstablebuild aims to share a percentage of Rune's service revenue with contributors through a transparent, auditable ledger.
The tool is available for free for up to two nodes. Paid tiers include a $10 per month subscription for up to 10 nodes, as well as a "Rune for teams" option.
