Google DeepMind Employees Demand Management Plans and Policies to Guarantee Physical Safety from ICE

These requests were posted on an internal message board for approximately 3,000 employees of the company's AI division, two days after Alex Pretti, a nurse in Minneapolis, was shot and killed by federal agents.

The poster stated, "The events of the past week have shown that immigration status or citizenship is no deterrent to detention, violence, and even death at the hands of federal agents," questioning the safety measures in place within the office and during commutes.

This message received over 20 reactions. However, as of Monday evening, there had been no response from Google's senior management.

Top executives, including Sundar Pichai and Demis Hassabis, have reportedly remained silent internally regarding Pretti's death. Meanwhile, Jeff Dean, Chief Scientist at Google DeepMind, has criticized ICE on X.

Additionally, another employee cited an instance in the autumn where federal agents arrived at the reception of the Cambridge office without prior notice. Google's head of security explained that agents without a warrant were asked to leave.

Executives at AI companies tend to refrain from making public comments on ICE activities. Sam Altman of OpenAI has stated in internal messages that the ICE response has gone too far.
