Google Removes Some AI Overview Health Information Following The Guardian Investigation

Additionally, an error recommending that pancreatic cancer patients avoid high-fat diets was discovered, although this particular instance has not been removed.

The Guardian's investigation revealed that while raw data tables for ALT and AST were displayed in liver function test search results, background information such as age and gender was not taken into account. Vanessa Hebditch of the British Liver Trust warned that the definition of "normal" presented by the AI may differ from actual medical standards, which could lead patients to neglect follow-up treatment.

While Google declined to comment on specific removals, the company told The Verge that it is investing in the quality of AI Overviews and explained that "the vast majority of information is accurate." Google stated that its internal team of clinicians conducts reviews and that in many cases, the information is not inaccurate but is supported by high-quality websites.

The problem lies in the fact that AI Overviews are constructed based on web results that rank high in Google's page ranking. Content optimized for SEO or spam is fed into the AI models and summarized in an authoritative tone, creating a structure that is prone to causing misunderstandings. The Guardian confirmed that AI Overviews continued to appear even when search queries were modified.
