Google has started testing a way for shoppers in India to buy products from Walmart-owned Flipkart directly through Gemini and AI Mode, according to people familiar with the matter and an experience seen by TechCrunch. The feature aims to expand Google's AI services from simple product discovery into direct transactions.

In the ongoing test, select product listings for items such as smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories feature a “Buy” button within the Gemini and Google AI Mode interfaces. Tapping the button reportedly takes users directly to a Flipkart checkout flow without requiring them to leave the AI interface. The test is currently limited to a specific group of users and a small selection of products.
Google plans to roll out the experience more broadly later in October, ahead of India's festive shopping season. This move comes as major AI players, including OpenAI, increasingly integrate commerce capabilities into their offerings to facilitate online purchases.
While Google has previously introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to enable AI agents to interact with retailers, the current Flipkart test appears to use a Flipkart-branded checkout flow rather than a Google-hosted experience. Google confirmed to TechCrunch that it "is always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses more easily."
