Security Cameras Transformed into Automatic Bird Identification Systems Using BirdNET-Go

A Los Angeles-based IT professional, Jason Tucker, has demonstrated how to repurpose household security cameras into an automated bird identification system by using the open-source tool BirdNET-Go. The system utilizes the microphones of existing IP cameras to detect and identify bird species through local AI model execution.

BirdNET-Go operates 24/7 in the background, analyzing audio streams to identify species instantly. Because the AI models run locally on hardware such as a server or a Raspberry Pi, the system ensures user privacy by avoiding cloud-based processing or API calls, and it functions without monthly subscription fees. The tool supports various models, including Google Perch v2, which expands detection capabilities to 14,795 species.

The system is compatible with any camera supporting the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP). It offers several advanced features, such as custom alerts for specific bird species via push notifications or Discord, and the ability to track the biodiversity of a yard over time. Furthermore, BirdNET-Go can integrate with community platforms like BirdWeather for data sharing and automation platforms like Home Assistant via MQTT.

While the system provides significant utility for birdwatching, its performance depends on the hardware. Running multiple high-demand models simultaneously can lead to high CPU utilization, particularly on older hardware.
