These extensions incorporate "playbooks," designed so that the AI can instantly learn how to use new tools effectively and deliver meaningful results from the first command without complex setup.
Installation is completed with a single command: gemini extensions install <GitHub URL or local path>. Gemini CLI is an open-source AI agent, and these extensions are positioned as power-ups for its capabilities.
At the time of the announcement, partners including Dynatrace, Elastic, Figma, Harness, Postman, Shopify, Snyk, and Stripe are participating. Google also stated that it will provide extensions for generative AI and data manipulation.
The relationship with MCP (Model Context Protocol) has also been clarified. Google explained that while MCP provides the raw connection to tools, extensions function as a layer that adds intelligence and personalization on top of that connection.
