NVIDIA, Google, and Emerald AI announced on September 16 the formation of the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA). The alliance aims to promote the widespread adoption of "flexible data centers" capable of dynamically adjusting electricity consumption in response to power grid conditions.

NVIDIA, Google, and Emerald AI Launch Alliance to Address Data Center Power Demand
The initiative was launched to address the growing energy constraints facing AI infrastructure expansion in the United States. Traditional interconnection processes are designed for facilities with static electricity demand, whereas flexible data centers can adjust their power draw by shifting computing workloads, discharging storage, or using paired generation. Such capabilities allow large electricity consumers to act as controllable resources rather than inflexible loads.
AEMA is designed to be technology-neutral and performance-based, focusing on measurable service such as response speed, duration, and reliability. The alliance intends to develop technical approaches and collaborate with utilities to streamline the connection process for AI facilities, which can help optimize existing grid capacity and defer costly infrastructure upgrades.
The founding members are joined by 18 launch partners, including Anthropic, National Grid, and AES. Tyler Norris from Google will serve as the chair of the alliance. According to NVIDIA, this collaborative approach seeks to provide a "win-win" solution for the industry, energy systems, and local communities.
