Ai2 Open-Sources AstaBrief 8B for Rapid Scientific Report Generation

Ai2 has open-sourced AstaBrief 8B, a small language model specifically trained for generating cited scientific reports. The model is designed to transform research questions and retrieved literature excerpts into structured reports, offering an efficient alternative to larger, proprietary models.

AstaBrief 8B was developed to address the specific demands of scientific work, such as the need for evidence-based grounding and verifiability. By utilizing supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and direct preference optimization (DPO), the model achieves significantly higher efficiency than the proprietary models used in Ai2's Asta platform. In tests, AstaBrief's "Fast mode" averaged 51.1 seconds per report, making it approximately 3.5 times faster than the 178.5 seconds required by the "Thinking mode" powered by Claude.

As an open-weights model, AstaBrief allows research institutions to run report generation on their own infrastructure, which is particularly useful for protecting sensitive or unpublished research data. The release includes the model weights, the training data, and an example workflow that enables researchers to generate reports from their own PDF documents.
