OpenAI Migrates Habitat Storage Platform from Python to Rust for Massive Scaling

OpenAI has completed a major architectural transition for Habitat, its internal online storage platform, by rewriting the service from Python to Rust. The transition, completed in the second quarter of 2026, was assisted by Codex and GPT-5.5 with a team of two engineers.

Habitat, which first launched at DevDay 2023 as a Python library for GPTs, has evolved into a critical distributed system. As of September 2026, the platform manages over 500 petabytes of data and handles more than 70 million requests per second, supporting over 1 billion weekly users across approximately 40 geographic regions.

The move to Rust was driven by the need to manage unprecedented growth. While the Python implementation using asyncio allowed for rapid development, it faced challenges with CPU-intensive tasks and tail latencies due to the Global Interpreter Lock (GIL) and event loop scheduling delays. By migrating to Rust, OpenAI achieved a 6x improvement in CPU efficiency and a 15x improvement in memory efficiency, alongside significantly reduced latency.

The Rust-based Habitat now handles 95% of OpenAI's production requests, with the legacy Python version expected to be fully deprecated within weeks.
