OpenAI Introduces Astra for Law and Enhances ChatGPT Advertising with Sponsored Agents

OpenAI has introduced Astra for Law, a new AI foundation designed for law firms and legal technology companies. Built on GPT-6 Astra, the platform combines the model with specialized settings, tools, and context tailored for professional legal work. The system utilizes a legal search index covering more than 230 million URLs, including U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions.

In validation tests on the Vals AI Legal Research Bench, Astra for Law achieved a 54.0% overall correctness rate on complex reasoning tasks, which represents a 40% relative improvement compared to GPT-6 Astra using web search alone. The platform also allows customization through 26 ecosystem plugins that connect ChatGPT to existing specialist tools like Relativity and Clio. To protect client confidentiality, eligible law firms can access these capabilities through a Trusted Access Program, which includes options for Zero Data Retention (ZDR) on the API. Astra for Law will be initially offered to selected law firms through Trusted Access in ChatGPT and Codex, with API access expected soon.

Separately, OpenAI is testing new AI-powered experiences for ChatGPT Ads in the United States. These updates include "Sponsored Agents," which allow users to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad. To assist advertisers, OpenAI is rolling out new tools in Ads Manager that enable users to create, update, and analyze campaigns using natural-language prompts. These updates also include AI-powered text customization and new integrations with HubSpot for CRM and Shopify for ecommerce. The Shopify app is expected to be available in international markets where ChatGPT Ads are available starting September 23.

In related industry developments, the international law firm Cooley has implemented "GO Public," a proprietary AI product built on ChatGPT Work. The tool uses an agentic harness to analyze information, helping lawyers review and validate data to expedite the preparation process for initial public offerings (IPOs).
