OpenAI Launches Dots: An Always-On AI Assistant Powered by GPT-6 Astra

Users can interact with Dots through a text-based interface or via voice calls on ChatGPT for web, desktop, and mobile. The assistants can also connect to organizational platforms such as Slack and Microsoft Teams to maintain context across different channels. OpenAI is also introducing ChatGPT Space, a new collaborative workspace, and is working with Microsoft to integrate specialist Dots with enterprise governance and security controls in Agent 365.

While current users are limited to creating one Dot, OpenAI plans to allow the deployment of multiple simultaneous agents in the future. The assistants feature a "bubbly" cartoonish persona and are designed to learn user preferences over time to personalize their output. To manage autonomy, Dots include built-in rules for independent action, which users can customize to block certain tasks or require manual permission. An "auto-review" feature is also included to help verify that actions comply with custom rules and safety requirements.

OpenAI has begun rolling out Dots to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. The company is also testing a feature that allows organizations to create "specialist" Dots for specific roles within an organization. OpenAI noted that conversations with Dots will not count toward standard ChatGPT usage limits.
