While the system was intended to condense target-list work from hours into minutes, it reportedly processed a site cataloged as a military facility due to outdated data, despite commercial satellite imagery showing the location as a school with playground markings since 2017.
The incident was described as part of a cascade of preventable failures, including the use of outdated satellite imagery and poor intelligence. Additionally, civilian harm mitigation teams within the Department of Defense have seen staffing levels drop by approximately 90% in recent years, with Centcom's specific group shrinking from 10 members to one.
A spokesperson for Palantir stated that the company is not responsible for underlying data or identifying intelligence deficiencies and noted there is no evidence the software was at fault.
