Photon raises $4.5M to build infrastructure for AI agents on messaging apps

AI startup Photon has raised $4.5 million in seed funding to develop infrastructure that enables AI agents to operate across messaging platforms such as iMessage and WhatsApp. The seed round was co-led by Gradient and A* with participation from Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, and Karman.

The company's platform, Spectrum, provides a unified API and tools for developers to build agents that can handle text, media, and location sharing within existing conversation flows. Photon aims to shift the user experience from installing new mobile apps to interacting with agents through familiar messaging services.

According to Photon, the startup has grown its revenue ten-fold in four months and has signed up over 40,000 developers. The company offers both an open-source version and a managed, subscription-based platform designed for production-grade reliability, including SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance. Current customers include fintech and consumer AI companies such as Rho and Ditto.
