Shopify enables browser-based AI agents to complete checkouts via WebMCP

Shopify announced on Monday that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on merchant sites, extending their capabilities beyond just searching for products and adding items to carts. By adding WebMCP support for checkout, including Shop Pay, these agents can read, update, and submit transactions through buyer authorization without relying on screenshots or web scraping.

The update introduces three specific tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. These allow agents to inspect a checkout screen, modify details such as delivery options or shipping addresses, and place orders.

Previously, Shopify's support for WebMCP focused on storefronts and carts, allowing agents to comb through inventory and manage shopping carts. This new integration is built upon Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which provides a standardized way for agents to discover products and manage the commerce process.

The feature is being rolled out to all eligible Shopify merchants. Major AI agents, including Muse and Instinct, already have partnerships with Shopify to support agentic commerce. According to Shopify staff product manager Gil Greenberg, these tools are designed to provide structured and efficient APIs to ensure accurate commerce facts and required disclosures during the transaction process.
