Snap introduces SPECS AR glasses and "Specs Intelligence" anticipatory AI service

Snap has announced SPECS, a new type of augmented reality (AR) glasses designed to make computing more human-centric. The wearable device integrates computing hardware directly into the frames, allowing users to interact with digital content through hand and voice movements without the need for external pucks or tethers.

Accompanying the hardware is "Specs Intelligence," an anticipatory AI service. Unlike traditional AI assistants that primarily respond to prompts, Specs Intelligence is designed to proactively surface relevant information and actions by understanding a user's goals, priorities, and routines through connected apps like Gmail and Slack. The service is being launched as a preview for iOS users, with a full early-access experience currently in the waitlist stage for Mac.

Snap stated that Specs Intelligence utilizes a proprietary mix of US-hosted open-source models and local large language models (LLMs) to provide context-aware assistance. To address privacy concerns, the company emphasized that personal content from connected accounts will not be used to train or fine-tune Snap's AI models, nor will it be used for personalized advertising.

The SPECS AR glasses are scheduled to begin shipping in the United States, United Kingdom, and France later this fall. The device is priced at $2,195, with an optional cellular-connected charging case available separately. In the U.S., Snap is partnering with Verizon to offer specific data plans and financing options for the new hardware.
