Pope Leo XIV Issues Encyclical Magnifica Humanitas on AI and Human Dignity

Cardinal Czerny (S.J.) stated that the future of AI is currently "under construction" and that the encyclical serves as a "seed" for discussion and awareness. The encyclical identifies three primary challenges, centering on the human being, human limitations, and human dignity.

The document points out that while AI facilitates access to information, it may encourage excessive dependence and the pursuit of prefabricated answers, potentially weakening individual creativity and judgment. It also urges caution regarding the "apparent objectivity" of AI responses, which can mask the cultural assumptions of the designers.

There are also observations regarding the imitation of empathy and friendship. While the imitation of human relationships by AI can sometimes be useful, the encyclical warns that for users with low discernment, it may create an illusion of relationship with a real human, risking the loss of the very desire to build genuine human connections.

Olaf, co-founder of Anthropic, stated that AI companies are constantly subject to pressures such as commercial sustainability, research frontiers, geopolitical pressure, pride, and ambition. Professor Lechombo (Santa Clara University) pointed out that risks of algorithmic addiction and digital colonialism already exist.
