Claude Code v2.1.277 Public — Expanded Agent Support and Stability Fixes

Anthropic has released Claude Code v2.1.277. This update introduces several new configuration options and functional improvements to enhance agentic workflows and enterprise connectivity.

New Features and Improvements

  • AGENTS.md Support: In projects without a CLAUDE.md file, Claude Code will now prioritize reading AGENTS.md to follow project instructions.
  • Enhanced Gateway Proxying: Added CLAUDE_GATEWAY_PROXY_IS_EGRESS_BOUNDARY=1 to handle outbound requests via forward proxies, and added support for static headers in Claude apps gateway upstreams.
  • Improved Prompt Handling: Invisible Unicode formatting and tag characters are now automatically removed and shown for review before being sent to the model.
  • VS Code Enhancements: Added background shells and task management to the agent map, a copy response button, and improved session cost/token usage visibility.
  • Artifact and Tool Improvements: Improved permission prompts for the Artifact tool and the dangerous-rm command, and improved how subagent results are presented via headers.

Bug Fixes

  • Session and Stability: Resolved several issues where sessions could hang or crash due to malformed configuration values in ~/.claude.json (such as theme, customApiKeyResponses, or claudeAiMcpEverConnected).
  • Tool Reliability: Fixed issues where the Write tool would silently end turns when targeting an existing directory, and corrected Edit tool behavior regarding escape sequences and large regex errors.
  • Plugin Management: Fixed various bugs in claude plugin install and the /plugin command, including crashes related to specific object property names and issues with uninstalled plugins reappearing.
  • Environment and Sandbox: Fixed issues with $TMPDIR expansion in Bash commands and addressed sandbox rule enforcement for compound Bash commands.
  • Windows Specifics: Fixed issues with PDF page reading for long file paths and corrected an error where tool calls would fail immediately after a reply on certain Windows environments.
