OpenAI is working with an independent mathematics advisory group, established by mathematicians, to serve as a bridge to the mathematical community and the broader public. This move follows internal discussions regarding the progress of a new internal model that has resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems, including the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem.

Hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study, the group will provide independent advice on reviewing and communicating emerging results, assessing their significance, and advising on academic and professional standards. The members—including Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer, Nikhil Srivastava, and Melanie Matchett Wood—will operate independently from OpenAI, with the freedom to offer unsolicited advice and make their findings public.
The initiative comes in response to the open letter "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics," in which mathematicians raised concerns that using AI-solved problems as benchmarks could negatively affect mathematical science. The letter argued that the rapid production of solutions by AI companies might disrupt traditional processes of understanding, peer review, and the development of new mathematical ideas.
