OpenAI has established an independent advisory group on mathematics and artificial intelligence to advise on the review and communication of emerging mathematical results. The group aims to serve as a bridge between OpenAI and the broader mathematical community and public.
OpenAI Forms Independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI
The initiative follows OpenAI's internal development of a new model, which has resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems across most areas of mathematics, including the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem. OpenAI stated that the pace of progress in mathematics has surprised its internal researchers.
The advisory group, hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study, will operate independently from OpenAI. Members will have the freedom to provide unrequested advice, comment on OpenAI's impact on the field, and make their advice public. Members will not be paid by OpenAI and can change the group's membership at will.
The group's mandate includes advising on how to assess the significance of emerging mathematical results, coordinating their dissemination, and providing guidance on academic and professional standards for mathematical research. It will also advise on how OpenAI's tools can support mathematical learning and research.
Initial members of the group include Timothy Gowers (Collège de France, Cambridge), Martin Hairer (EPFL, Imperial College London), Nikhil Srivastava (Berkeley, Simons Institute), and Melanie Matchett Wood (Harvard).
