Los Alamos National Laboratory Evaluates AI-Assisted PCB Design Platform

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) evaluated the Circuit Mind (CM) platform to determine its suitability for integration into the laboratory's printed circuit board (PCB) production workflow. The evaluation focused on the platform's ability to automate complex design tasks, including schematic generation, Bill of Materials (BoM) creation, and various technical reports.

The evaluation included two case studies: a medium-difficulty design and a high-difficulty design. In the medium-difficulty case, the platform achieved a 90% completion rate, significantly reducing manual engineering time. The total design time was approximately 4 hours and 13 minutes, compared to an estimated 60 to 80 hours for manual design. The CM platform automated tasks such as schematic generation, power analysis, and FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) reports, which resulted in significant time savings for engineers.

In the high-difficulty design, which involved components not present in the Circuit Mind database (represented as "virtual blocks"), the completion rate was 50%. The total design time was approximately 80 hours, with the platform automating about 50% of the workload. While the tool could handle power design and part selection for available components, manual intervention remained necessary for integrating complex elements like FPGAs and DDR4 memory.

The study concluded that the Circuit Mind platform can be integrated into the PCB production flow, providing substantial reductions in manual design time through automation of schematics, BoM, and analytical reports.
