U.S. President Donald Trump announced on September 22 (local time) during his speech at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York that the term "Artificial Intelligence" (AI) will be changed to "Super Intelligence" (SI). He stated that the U.S. will use this new designation in all official documents and will call on other nations to do the same.
Trump rejected attempts to create globalist regulatory frameworks for AI management. He remarked that the word "artificial" makes intelligence sound fake, whereas the technology is actually "amazing."
In a previous social media post on Truth Social on September 19, Trump had proposed several alternatives, including "Superior Intelligence (SI)," "Extreme Intelligence (EI)," and "Supreme Intelligence (SI)," while calling for a vote. However, the term "Super Intelligence" announced during his speech was not among the three options originally presented.
Addressing concerns regarding the dangers of AI, Trump criticized those who warn of existential risks, comparing them to those who claimed global warming would destroy humanity. He emphasized that "whoever controls Super Intelligence wins," asserting that the U.S. is leading significantly over competitors like China. He added that while the U.S. will support AI growth, it will continue to monitor the field through the Department of Justice.
In the field of AI research, the term "superintelligence" is generally used to refer to hypothetical AI systems that far surpass human intelligence.
