Amazon CEO Warns That Data Center Moratoriums Could Jeopardize US AI Dominance

Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman has issued a strong call for public support for AI data center projects, warning that failing to build sufficient infrastructure could lead to irreparable harm to the United States' economy and national security.

In a detailed blog post released on October 2, Garman emphasized that the United States "can't afford to lose" the race for AI dominance. He addressed growing public concerns regarding the impact of data centers on employment, power demands, and the environment, noting that such discussions are often fueled by misinformation. Garman specifically stated there are reports of foreign entities intentionally spreading misinformation in the US to slow down data center development for geopolitical reasons.

The memorandum highlights that over 100 data center moratoriums—temporary bans or limits on new developments—are currently being considered across the country. Garman warned that if these measures are enacted, the consequences for the nation's competitive edge could last for generations.

To address community concerns, Amazon is introducing a "Data Center Commitment." This initiative includes practices such as job creation, measures to prevent increases in local energy rates, and a pledge to invest more than $1 billion into communities near its data center sites.

Additionally, Amazon announced it will no longer use nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) with government agencies. This decision follows scrutiny from Democratic lawmaker Jamie Raskin regarding secret deals between tech companies and local officials. Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, David Zapolsky, noted that while the industry has a history of secrecy, the company believes community leaders should be able to share information with their constituents.
