Claude Fable 5.1 has solved the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cryptogram authored by Sir Thomas Urquhart. A cryptogram is a short message encoded with specific rules to prevent unauthorized reading. The 64-number puzzle, found in Urquhart's Logopandecteision, had remained unsolved despite numerous attempts using frequency analysis and substitution methods.

The model achieved the solution in approximately 44 minutes after consuming 176,000 tokens. The breakthrough came from identifying a simple clue: the key was not an external alphabet, but the text itself. By using the numbers as indices for the "Proquiritations"—a series of 32 introductory remarks in the book—the model extracted the first letter of specific words to reveal a royalist prayer for King Charles II.

Fable 5.1 also successfully deciphered a larger, related puzzle known as the Cyphral Octastich. This achievement suggests that AI models may be capable of resolving historical mysteries and archival puzzles by persisting through complex datasets where human attention was previously a bottleneck.
