Contrails are clouds that form when aircraft fly through cold, moist air; they are said to contribute to global warming by trapping heat in the atmosphere. Google's system integrates AI-driven predictions, satellite imagery, and meteorological data to identify regions prone to contrail formation in advance. This allows air traffic controllers and pilots to slightly adjust altitude to bypass the affected areas.
Out of more than 100 operational trials across Cathay Pacific's network, more than 80 flights successfully navigated avoidance routes. According to estimates based on Google's satellite imagery analysis, these flights reduced the warming effect caused by contrails by approximately 40%.
