OpenAI has been intensifying its creator marketing efforts to promote ChatGPT across a wide range of daily activities, including parenting, fitness, and business tasks. According to data from the influencer marketing platform HypeAuditor, the number of sponsored Instagram posts promoting ChatGPT rose from 61 in June to 122 in July, and reached 141 in August.
OpenAI ramps up Instagram influencer campaigns to broaden ChatGPT user base
The company’s strategy serves two primary objectives: driving business adoption of enterprise tools and ensuring millions of consumers continue using ChatGPT as their primary large language model (LLM). Campaign pitches and talent managers indicate the messaging focuses on positioning ChatGPT as a "cool" assistant that supports work that is "good for the world," rather than a replacement for human roles.
To support these efforts, OpenAI has recruited specialists from major social media platforms, including Instagram's former head of partnerships, Charles Porch. The company has also partnered with the influencer marketing agency Viral Nation. The campaigns target diverse demographics, such as parenting influencers demonstrating how ChatGPT helps with homework, and fitness creators addressing health and running queries.
While the expansion aims to bridge the gap between AI and the creator economy, some influencers have faced audience backlash, with some commenters labeling sponsored content as "dystopian." Despite this, the competition for influencer partnerships remains high, with companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Higgsfield AI all actively pitching to creators to secure market share.
