Google Research Launches Project Suncatcher Prototype Satellite to Test ML Infrastructure in Orbit

Google Research has launched a prototype satellite for Project Suncatcher into orbit as part of the SpaceX Transporter-18 rideshare mission. The project is being developed in partnership with Planet.

The mission serves as a research moonshot to explore whether space can eventually host scalable machine learning infrastructure. The team has confirmed contact with the satellite, which is operating as expected.

Over the coming weeks, the mission will collect in-orbit data to observe how Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) handle the physical stress of spaceflight, including radiation and extreme thermal conditions. Detailed research regarding the mission has been published in the journal Joule.
