The service functions by creating magnet links for trending Apache-2.0 and MIT-licensed models. Each torrent includes a web-seed—a BitTorrent feature (BEP-19) that embeds an HTTPS URL within the torrent—pointing directly to the model's file on Hugging Face. This ensures that models can be downloaded directly from Hugging Face while the host is active, while the peer-to-peer swarm takes over the distribution if the original link becomes unavailable.
To maintain integrity, every file carries its official Hugging Face SHA-256 checksum, allowing users to verify that the downloaded weights are authentic. For developers, Pirate Face aims to provide compatibility with existing workflows; by setting the environment variable HF_ENDPOINT=https://pirateface.co, users can point their pipelines to the new endpoint with zero code changes.
Currently, models must first be available on Hugging Face to be included in Pirate Face. The platform is also developing account features, including identity verification to prevent impersonation and upcoming community benefits such as free compute credits.
