Shopify enables payments via browser-based AI agents, starting WebMCP support
Shopify Product Manager Gil Greenberg pointed out that previous shopping via browser agents was time-consuming due to repeated page loading and data entry, and was also prone to errors. He stated that the adoption of WebMCP will allow agents to operate more rapidly.
Shopify already supports WebMCP in its storefront and cart, which allowed agents to search for products and add them to the cart. With this update, three new tools—et_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout—are being introduced to the checkout domain, including Shop Pay. This enables agents to read and update cart contents and finalize orders upon obtaining the buyer's approval.
AI agents such as Muse and Instinct are already partnering with Shopify, with a partnership announcement made with Instinct dated September 29, 2026. While companies like Amazon are blocking product purchases by AI agents, Shopify is moving toward embracing them.
