Foremerge is an open-source coordination protocol designed to manage parallel work between multiple AI coding agents. While Git is effective at detecting text-based conflicts when agents edit the same lines of a file, it cannot detect semantic conflicts where changes in different files undermine each other—such as when one agent refactors a service that another agent is currently extending.
Foremerge: Open-Source Protocol to Resolve Intent Conflicts Between Parallel AI Coding Agents
Built on top of Git, Foremerge allows agents to announce their intended changes, scopes, and dependencies before implementation begins. This "shared whiteboard" approach uses a local SQLite database stored within the repository's .git directory, ensuring that all linked worktrees share the same coordination state.
Key technical features include:
- Intent Declaration: Agents publish their planned operations and semantic scopes (such as symbols, APIs, or configurations) to identify potential overlaps.
- Advisory Conflict Detection: The protocol provides warnings when intents collide but does not implement file locking or block agent progress, allowing users to maintain full control.
- Verification-Gated Lifecycle: Foremerge supports a lifecycle for ChangeSets, where changes are validated against specific Git fingerprints through automated checks.
- MCP Support: It provides a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, allowing integration with various AI clients like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor.
The current version, 0.5.0, is a local-first MVP providing a CLI, JSON API, and deterministic conflict detection. It is designed to work in heterogeneous environments, enabling coordination between different AI models and clients.
