The group's membership includes several prominent mathematicians, such as Timothy Gowers (University of Cambridge), Edward Witten (IAS), Martin Hairer (EPFL), and Melanie Matchett Wood (Harvard). The group operates independently and members do not accept payment for their work. AGMAI stated it is willing to offer recommendations to any AI company whose models are likely to have a significant impact on mathematics.
The formation of the group follows an approach by OpenAI to some of its members regarding the establishment of an external advisory board. The group is currently addressing the challenge of advising OpenAI on how to coordinate the release of a large number of significant mathematical results that the company reports have been produced by its internal model. AGMAI has opened a channel for input from the mathematical community to inform its upcoming recommendations.
