Tailwind Labs has announced that it is joining Shopify. This acquisition is intended to provide Tailwind CSS, a widely used open-source CSS framework, with a stable, long-term home for active maintenance.

Adam Wathan, the creator of Tailwind CSS, stated that the move allows the framework to be maintained for the millions of people who depend on it. He noted that joining Shopify provides an environment where the team can solve complex application challenges alongside Shopify's own product development.

Tailwind CSS will continue to be developed as an open-source project under the MIT license. While existing customers of commercial products like Tailwind UI and Tailwind App will maintain their access, Shopify is closing sign-ups for new customers to focus on the core framework.

The acquisition comes after Tailwind Labs faced business challenges due to shifts in how users access documentation, which had impacted the company's ability to sustain its engineering team.
