Tailscale has announced the general availability (GA) of Aperture, an AI gateway designed to provide AI agents with the necessary models, tools, and infrastructure while maintaining security.

Originally developed as an LLM proxy to eliminate the need for distributing API keys to engineers and agents, Aperture has evolved into a comprehensive gateway. It includes features such as cost controls, guardrails, extensive logging, and both MCP (Model Context Protocol) and API proxy capabilities.

With this release, Tailscale introduced new MCP endpoints: Tailscale and Tailscale SSH. These allow AI agents to perform network operations, such as adding new nodes to a Tailnet or accessing nodes via SSH, to automate tasks like service deployment.

To ensure security, Tailscale's unidirectional access control rules remain in effect, and any new machine added by an agent requires human approval. Additionally, all agent actions are recorded in audit logs. Aperture also features a built-in chat UI and a "Projects" function that allows users to group chats with shared contexts and tool permissions.
