Google has changed the name of "NotebookLM"—which primarily focused on reading and summarizing documents—to "Gemini Notebook" in July 2026. Along with this change, the service's role is expanding from merely understanding information to handling tasks such as data analysis and the creation of deliverables.
In June 2026, a feature was announced that allows users to write and execute code within notebooks. This enables complex processes such as data aggregation and analysis in addition to document summarization and searching. Furthermore, features for converting information into concrete artifacts, such as graphs, spreadsheets, and slide presentations, have been enhanced.
The diversification of functions also extends to output formats. In addition to traditional summaries and answers, it now supports generating overviews via audio or video, mind maps, reports, and even infographics.
Additionally, in April 2026, a feature was provided to synchronize "Notebooks" within the Gemini app with the former NotebookLM. This represents a growing integration between services within Google's AI ecosystem, allowing notebooks created in Gemini to be used in NotebookLM as well.
