Cloudflare has announced the open beta of "cf," a new command-line interface (CLI) specifically designed for the next generation of agentic software development. Unlike its predecessor, Wrangler, which supports approximately 280 operations, "cf" leverages a new unified API generation pipeline called Forge to cover the entirety of the Cloudflare API surface, encompassing over 3,000 operations.

The new CLI is built with agents as the primary users in mind. While humans typically interact with CLIs via terminal outputs, "cf" defaults to JSON responses to minimize token usage and processing time for AI agents. It also introduces several agent-focused features, such as cf cli search, which allows agents to discover the correct commands using natural language based on API descriptions.
For configuration, "cf" moves away from TOML and JSONC to a TypeScript-based format. This typed configuration enables agents to interpret and edit configurations more accurately through language server protocol (LSP) plugins.
Cloudflare plans to transition users from Wrangler to "cf" over time. The company will provide maintenance support for Wrangler for 18 months after the "cf" open beta ends. Users can migrate existing Workers using the cf migrate command.
