The initiative follows the August rollout of ChatGPT for Teens in Australia, a default experience tailored for users aged 13 to 17. This experience includes updated safeguards designed for their specific developmental needs and builds upon existing parental controls and under-18 safety policies.
OpenAI's blueprint emphasizes that responsibility for safety should not fall primarily on young people or their families, but rather on companies to build protections into their products from the outset. The company expressed support for risk-based legislative frameworks and is currently consulting with the Australian Government on these approaches to ensure they promote both safety and responsible innovation.
