Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has proposed a new philosophy for the development of superintelligence, centered on individual empowerment, invention, and a balance of power. In a recent essay, Zuckerberg argued that instead of centralizing AI power within a few institutions, superintelligence should be widely distributed to serve as a tool for personal empowerment.
Meta Proposes Philosophy of Individual Empowerment for Superintelligence
According to the essay, Meta aims to deliver personal superintelligence that helps individuals achieve their goals across various domains, including health, career, and education. To ensure trust, Meta plans to implement strong privacy features, such as a fully private mode where even the company cannot access personal information, similar to the end-to-end encryption used in WhatsApp.
Addressing potential risks, Zuckerberg suggested that a healthy balance of power is achieved when multiple independent agents and institutions compete and check one another. He also advocated for close cooperation between frontier AI labs and governments, proposing that labs provide intermediate training checkpoints to help governments harden critical infrastructure against cybersecurity and biological risks.
Meta also reaffirmed its commitment to the open-source ecosystem, stating that open-source AI is a vital force for empowering people and preventing the detrimental effects of centralization.
