Google has launched a new interactive, open-access experience for its AI & Economy ATLAS, making its global data points easier to explore. The platform enables users to examine AI adoption rates across various occupations—ranging from electricians to purchasing managers—and explore adoption rates by country.

Google expands AI & Economy ATLAS with interactive tools and research on scientific AI usage
In collaboration with Google DeepMind and MIT FutureTech, Google also released new research based on ATLAS data. The study analyzed 2,600 specialized AI models and surveyed over 600 scientists in the U.S. and U.K. to understand how AI is integrated into scientific workflows.
The research indicates that scientists adopt AI at higher rates than many other professions, with nearly half using some form of AI every day. The study found that while Large Language Models (LLMs) like Gemini are used widely across various scientific fields and task categories, specialized AI models are more prevalent in health and life sciences, as well as for tasks involving domain-specific data prediction, generation, and simulation.
While scientists reported saving nearly seven hours per week through AI usage, the research noted that these gains do not immediately translate to new discoveries. Instead, significant time is being spent validating AI outputs. Furthermore, the study identified emerging bottlenecks in physical experimentation and clinical validation, suggesting that realizing AI's full potential may require redesigning scientific processes and workflows.
