OpenAI updates Codex with reusable cloud environments and introduces ModRetro Chromatic game creation plugin

At its DevDay on Tuesday, OpenAI introduced several updates to its software engineering agent, Codex, aimed at making it more versatile and persistent. A key addition is the introduction of reusable cloud development environments. Unlike previous isolated remote sandboxes, these environments are configurable and persistent, allowing developers to access their workspaces from any device—including computers, phones, or the cloud—to facilitate faster task starts and shared team workspaces.

Codex is also receiving a refreshed Command Line Interface (CLI) that enables developers to start and direct tasks using voice commands. Additionally, a new /agents view has been added to improve task delegation and tracking, alongside a cleaner terminal user interface designed for readability during long sessions.

During the event, OpenAI announced a collaboration with ModRetro to allow users to create games for the Chromatic, a handheld device designed by Palmer Luckey that mimics the Game Boy Color. Through a new "ModRetro Chromatic" plugin, developers can use Codex to write games for Game Boy Color compatible devices and emulators using natural language. The plugin allows users to build ROMs, run automated playtests via an integrated emulator, and stream the gameplay to a physical Chromatic device for testing. Once a game is finished, it can be flashed onto a physical Chromatic cartridge.

On the security front, OpenAI is launching Codex Security Cloud. This toolset allows developers to scan GitHub repositories on demand or on a schedule. The service can investigate findings, remove duplicates, and prepare fixes in the cloud even when the user's device is inactive. This toolset includes access to models from OpenAI’s cybersecurity initiative, Daybreak Blue.

Further API enhancements include a new Decisions API for real-time decision-making using the Luna model, and an updated Agents API. The updated API now supports computer use and integration with Amazon’s Bedrock Managed Agents, allowing OpenAI agents to run on AWS infrastructure.
