OpenAI has hired three former executives from Patreon to anchor its product strategy for creators.
Sam Yam, the co-founder and former technology chief of Patreon, announced on X that he is joining OpenAI to lead "Creator Product." He is joined by Drew Rowny, Patreon's former product head, and Shannon Ma, its former engineering head, both of whom recently stepped down from the subscription platform.
"We’re going to build together with Creators at OpenAI and share early access to a new set of tools that I think will be critically valuable to Creators and their communities," Yam said in his announcement. He also suggested that further information would be available at OpenAI DevDay, scheduled for Tuesday, September 29th.
The recruitment suggests OpenAI is exploring entry into the creator monetization business, a sector where Patreon has established the standard for subscription-based models. This move follows a period of restructuring at Patreon, which announced an update roadmap after laying off 20% of its staff in January.
