Google DeepMind and Primordial Soup announced that they have produced a short documentary, "Love, Rendered," which uses AI technology to recreate the past memories of its subjects. The film follows an elderly couple struggling with memory loss as they attempt to recall the memory of the moment they first met.
On the technical side, the production combines image restoration technology using old photographs with performance capture (a technique for capturing human movement as digital data). By mapping the couple's current gestures onto their younger selves, the production team constructed detailed visual memories.
The project was inspired by "reminiscence therapy," which stimulates memories through sensory triggers such as music and old photographs, and aims to recreate moments that were not recorded through digital expressive methods.
