Jakub Pachocki, Chief Scientist at OpenAI, expressed the view that it is highly likely that "Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI)"—where AI increasingly drives its own development—will be realized in the future.

Pachocki predicts that as progress in current inference models continues, RSI, which allows AI to accelerate its own development, will become central to scientific discovery. He suggested that machine-led RSI will occur if AI progress continues, and stated that for OpenAI, focusing research on RSI is the only way to remain at the forefront of AI research.

Pachocki expressed concern that no one may currently be prepared for the consequences of AI intelligence continuing to rise. He stated that the best path forward is to combine AI development with the strengthening of alignment (technology to ensure AI adheres to human intent and values) and monitoring.
