Demand for OpenAI's latest AI model, "GPT-6 Astra," is surging, and it has emerged that the company may be forced to temporarily suspend new registrations for its paid plans.

According to a report by GIGAZINE, development staff member Thibault Sotiou posted on X that the demand for Astra is unprecedented and that while they are taking every possible measure to maintain demand, the growth is faster than ever before. He stated that if the popularity continues, they may have to temporarily suspend new registrations for the "Pro" subscription.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also addressed the situation, stating that providing excellent service to existing customers will be the top priority until the situation stabilizes.

GPT-6 Astra was released on 2026-09-03 and became available to users on paid plans, including "Plus" and above. The model is said to possess high capabilities as an AI agent and in coding, with high performance demonstrated immediately after its release. Expansion of the rollout to all Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users is currently underway.
