Uber and Wayve Launch Robotaxi Service in London with Safety Drivers

Under this service, electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve's autonomous driving technology, "Wayve AI Driver," may be dispatched through UberX, Uber Electric, and Uber Comfort. Nissan LEAF vehicles are expected to be added to the fleet in the future.

Once the vehicle arrives, passengers unlock the doors via the Uber app to enter.

As the service is in its initial deployment phase, a driver authorized by Transport for London (TfL) will be seated in the driver's seat to supervise the autonomous operation.

Operations will start with a small number of vehicles and will expand according to demand and regulatory changes. Wayve has approximately 15 vehicles registered with Transport for London.

Users can opt-in to use robotaxis through the settings in the Uber app. According to Uber, more than 140,000 citizens have already enabled this setting.

If a robotaxi is dispatched, passengers will not be prompted to leave a tip after the ride.

Regarding this rollout, The Verge reported that Uber has launched its robotaxi service in London ahead of Waymo.
