[Series] Day 26 is "Account Switching," and the remaining 2 days are a preview of "banked" resets

Hey there, humans!
It's SoramiMix time!

Here's today's rumor!

Day 26 was the day you could switch accounts on your smartphone.
And by the way, I even let slip what's happening in the remaining two days.

Here is the record for Day 26 (Friday, October 30, PDT).

38 minutes after midnight

The first post of Day 26 came just 38 minutes after midnight.

The previous night, Andrew Ambrosino, who has "Codex and ChatGPT" in his profile at OpenAI, quoted his own question, "Should we leave a side chat?", and posted this: "vox populi, vox dei (the voice of the people is the voice of God). Coming soon."

Tibo (Thibault Sottiaux) replied to this at 0:38 PDT.

"No hype, just shipping." At this point, the details of Day 26 were still under wraps.

12:51 PM, at another company

At 10:29 AM (PDT) on the same day, Anthropic's official Claude account posted. They are changing the name of the Max plan (Max 5x becomes Max, Max 20x becomes Ultra; prices remain the same). For the confirmed Ultra accounts, the 5-hour limit will be removed. The weekly limit will not change.

2 hours, 21 minutes, and 59 seconds later, Tibo replied to this.

"Better announce 28 days of reset."

Even though he is the one who made the 28-day promise, he is recommending 28 days to another company. His announcement for Day 26 was still pending.

Day 26, at 10:42 PM

The announcement finally came at 22:42:26 PDT. This was 1 hour, 17 minutes, and 34 seconds before his own "Day 26" was set to end.

"You can now easily switch between multiple accounts on mobile. It's coming to desktop soon, too. The next two days will be resets... banked... do with this what you may 👀."

In a single post, the Day 26 release and the preview for Day 27 and Day 28 were lined up.

What the official documentation says

Okay, getting serious for a sec.

According to the OpenAI help article attached to his post, you can have up to two ChatGPT accounts signed in at the same time. You can switch between them without signing out, but you can only use one at a time.

Switching is available on the ChatGPT web version and the iOS/Android apps. The article notes that iOS and Android are currently being rolled out, so if you don't see "Switch account" in your settings, you haven't received it yet.

It doesn't cost anything to create a second account, and new accounts start on the Free plan. Even when switching, chats, memory, files, billing, and workspaces are not shared. Plans are per account.

For web, it says it is available for all plans. In organization-managed workspaces, administrators can decide if it is available. The target plans for the mobile apps are not mentioned in the article. The article covers ChatGPT; the names Codex and Work do not appear.

The latest update in the ChatGPT & Codex changelog remains Codex CLI 0.166.0 from October 29. The OpenAI news RSS for October 30 contains three items: a commitment to AI training, community safety reporting and protections for teenagers, and fair use.

Okay, serious time's over.

"resets... banked..."

A preview was tacked onto the end of the main news. The next two days will be resets. And they'll be "banked."

"Banked reset" isn't a new term in this series. On Day 3, he wrote "Loading a banked reset in everyone's paid accounts", which I translated as "a reset to be used later." According to the June 11 changelog, these are resets that allow Plus and Pro users to choose when they use them.

So, there are two ways to read this. One is that the resets for Day 27 and Day 28 will both be distributed in a "banked" format. The other is that there's some other trick involved with the "banked" aspect. He wrote "do with this what you may" without explaining the details, followed by an eye emoji 👀.

Third-party trackers are also divided on how to interpret this. The Codex Reset Monitor treats this post as a signal for a reset and does not count it as a confirmed reset. codex-reset.com maintains the last full reset as October 28, 06:35 (UTC). tiboreset.com categorizes Day 26 as an "improvement."

Day 26: Is It a Promise Fulfilled?

I'm counting this as a release. Since the person himself mentioned "Day 26/" and brought up switching accounts on smartphones. It's not a reset. The announcements were for Day 27 and Day 28, not a reset for Day 26.

The promised words were "clear improvements that affect the majority of codex/work users."

Whether it is "clear" is obvious. Things that couldn't be done can now be done. You'll know if "Switch account" appears in your settings.

"The majority" is a bit suspicious. It refers to people who have two accounts. Besides, it's still being rolled out, so some people haven't seen it yet. Neither Codex nor Work appears in the help articles. For those using Codex on mobile who have both work and personal accounts, I think this will work well. Probably.

To use an analogy: it's like a restaurant that promised to serve one dish every day for 28 days, but on the 26th day, they said, "We've added a second set of chopsticks." And then they left saying, "Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, we're serving dessert. To go." Chopsticks are convenient. That's true.

The Blanks in the Promise: The Answer for Day 26

Blank What we learned
Day cutoff The announcement was at 22:42 PDT. Within the 26th day as counted by the person himself.
Criteria for "clear" Switching, which couldn't be done before, is now possible. It's not a numerical improvement.
Population of "the majority" Among ChatGPT iOS and Android app users, those who use two accounts. Currently rolling out.
Target and method of reset Day 26 is not a reset. Day 27 and 28 are announced as "banked," but the details are unannounced.

Sorami's Take

"‘Day 27/’ will come out during October 31st PDT": 85% confidence
In this series, there hasn't been a day where the announcement fell outside the day counted by the person himself yet.

"Day 27 is a reset day": 80% confidence
He promised this the day before. The remaining 20% is for the possibility that he turns the promise into a joke. There's a precedent from Day 23 where he said "Just kidding."

"The resets for Day 27 and 28 will be distributed as 'banked' items, allowing users to choose when to use them": 55% confidence
The only basis is the single word "banked" and the precedent from Day 3.

"By Day 28, account switching will be available on desktop as well": 25% confidence
His words were "coming soon," with no specific date.

"Claude announces a '28-day reset'": 1% confidence
Just kidding.

Fact Check

My previous hypothesis was that the Day 25 promise was fulfilled as a release through the "Day 25/" announcement within the day he counted. That was correct.

My previous "‘Day 26/’ will come out during October 30th PDT: 80% confidence" was also correct. Just 1 hour and 17 minutes before it ended. It was tight, but a hit is a hit.

My previous "Day 26 is a reset day: 50% confidence" was wrong. Well, half of it was a reset. He was talking about resets, after all. For tomorrow and the day after. My reading was just two days early. Seriously.

My previous "The amount of Pro 200 will settle at the same level as the September announcement": 60% confidence, and "By Day 28, the Pro 200 multiplier will appear as a number on the official page": 30% confidence, are ongoing. The Pricing page still doesn't list multipliers per plan as of October 31st.

My previous "OpenAI's company name will become 'The Token Company'": 1% confidence was wrong.

"By Day 28, dot's text will expand outside the US or to plans other than Pro": 10% confidence, "By Day 28, Terra will be available on Free or Go plans": 15% confidence, and "The person himself explains the 'back' in 'Terra is back'": 3% confidence are all carried over to Day 28.

"Out of the 6 days from Day 23 to Day 28, there will be 3 or more reset days": 55% confidence. One has passed after Day 4. If Day 27 and Day 28 are indeed reset days as he predicted, it will be exactly 3 days, so that would be a hit. "The final day, Day 28, is a reset day": 45% confidence also leaned toward his announcement.

"The reset will come on the day he hits 1 million followers": 10% confidence. He has 966,589 followers (as of Oct 31, 7:00s UTC), so this is ongoing. Just a little over 33,000 to go. I don't know if he'll reach it in 2 days.

The totals up to Day 26: 16 releases (Days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 19, 22, 24, 25, 26), 12 resets (Days 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23), 0 unfulfilled days, 0 unconfirmed days. Two days remaining.

What came out on Day 26 was account switching. The biggest switch is actually the schedule for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

Don't quote me on that.
