On the night of September 3, 2026, AI services from three companies—ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok—went offline almost simultaneously.
Looking at the sequence of events, Grok went down approximately two hours earlier, followed by ChatGPT and Claude, which stopped functioning at nearly the same time.
During the outage, unresponsive errors occurred across each company's chat services and APIs. It has been reported that this caused significant disruption as it coincided with the start of business hours in the United States and other regions.
SpaceXAI reported that the cause was a failure at its computing center in Memphis. Meanwhile, Anthropic staff posted that partial outages were occurring in Claude Code and the API due to infrastructure issues.
It has not yet been determined whether the outages at OpenAI and Anthropic were caused by the same Memphis facility as SpaceXAI. Official statements from each company are still awaited.
As of the time of writing, all services have been restored.
